Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;[b] it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.    1 Corinthians 13: 4-7

Let’s keep this short and sweet: Love is hard

Comprehending the complexities of the true love as depicted in the scriptures can be quite stretching and straight up uncomfortable at times.  I have thought to myself, if love is the greatest gift of all, why does it have to be so darn hard?

Many have heard the phrases “love is a choice” and “choose love”.  Like most things in life, yes, love is a choice, but why choose to love when you can actually BE love. We can become love through pursuing Love Himself, Jesus.  He is the truest and purest lover that ever has been or ever will be; all the rest is worldly and counterfeit.

We become love when we are in love (with Jesus)… short. sweet. simple. (kind of)

I have heard it said before that “you will know that you have truly learned to love when you can look at someone and desire nothing from them in return.” – Rolland Baker

When I first heard that statement, it really made me analyze the motives of my heart, and what it truly means for love to not “insist on its own way” (1Cor 13:5).  What I found was that even behind the kindest and most well intentioned of gestures was a hidden underlying motive that was completely selfish.

Love is death to self

It’s putting the needs of others before your own, without the expectation that they will do the same for you in return.

Simply put: If you love outwardly, yet deep down it was all for selfish gain, then it is not actually out of love at all.

Love does not insist on its own way

Jesus is the only one who can change our hearts to purely love.
The more time that we spend with Him, the more we will fall in love with Him.  The more we fall in love with Him, the the more we will live in the fullness of Him, and become His manifest love here on the earth.
